Lesson Seven – Subvert the Social.

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, a well-thought-out strategy is your compass, guiding your brand toward meaningful engagement and growth. This lesson will help you design an 8-month social media plan that emphasizes authentic interaction, strategic budgeting, and consistent content creation.

1. Embracing Interactivity Beyond Posting

Social media isn’t just a broadcast channel; it’s a two-way street. To foster genuine connections:

  • Elicit Conversations: Instead of merely sharing updates, pose open-ended questions to your audience. For instance:
    • “Do you wonder how [industry topic] impacts your daily life?”
    • “What do you think about [current event or trend]?”
  • Encourage User-Generated Content: Invite your followers to share their experiences or creations related to your brand. This not only boosts engagement but also builds a sense of community.
  • Respond Thoughtfully: Acknowledge comments and messages promptly. Show appreciation for positive feedback and address concerns with empathy.

2. Strategic Budgeting: Investing in Authentic Promotion

One of the greatest ways to subvert social – or “Fuck the Zuck” if you’ll excuse my French, is to take all of the money you would spend on ads and, instead of giving it to Meta, give it directly to influencers in your sphere who have the attention of your desired audience. Folks with a much larger following that you have the jump on you: they are also hustling, and I promise you will appreciate it if you offer them $100, $500 or $1000 to do a series of posts about your offering that will get seen by thousands of people. The best part? It’s not going to be dismissed as cynical algorithmically driven ads: everyone benefits when people who have established trust and rapport with your ideal clients get to buy some groceries as they help to spread your message.

You either have funds to spend to promote/boost ads and content, OR you put equal amounts of time (think:sweat equity) into doing reciprocal exchanges with people in your network whose work you promote, and who then promote yours.

  • Collaborate with Influencers: Identify influencers who align with your brand values and have the attention of your desired audience. Instead of spending on ads, invest directly in these individuals. For example, offering $100, $500, or $1,000 to an influencer for a series of posts can lead to authentic endorsements that resonate more deeply with their followers.
  • Mutual Promotion: If funds are limited, consider reciprocal arrangements. Promote the work of individuals in your network, and in return, they can highlight your offerings. This exchange leverages existing trust and expands reach without monetary expenditure.

3. Developing a Consistent Content Calendar

Consistency and quality are paramount in maintaining audience engagement:

  • Plan Ahead: While your website is under development, start building a social media calendar.
  • Establish a Rhythm: Determine a posting schedule that balances frequency with quality.
  • Maintain Visual Cohesion: Use tools like PicMonkey or Canva to create visually appealing graphics. Ensure that your posts adhere to a consistent color scheme, font selection, and layout to establish a recognizable brand aesthetic.
  • Craft Valuable Content: Share concise insights, tips, or stories that reflect your brand’s expertise and values. Remember, social media content is often fleeting; aim to make each post impactful without overanalyzing.

4. Platform-Specific Engagement Strategies

Each social media platform has its unique culture and user expectations:

  • Instagram:
    • Authenticity Over Perfection: Share candid moments, behind-the-scenes glimpses, or spontaneous snapshots. Avoid overly polished content; instead, focus on genuine storytelling.
    • Meaningful Captions: Accompany images with thoughtful reflections or questions to encourage interaction.
  • Facebook:
    • Foster Dialogue: Ask your audience for their opinions and experiences. For example:
      • “What are your thoughts on [specific topic]?”
      • “Can you share your experiences with [related activity]?”
    • Highlight Community Contributions: Share user-generated content, acknowledging and celebrating your audience’s insights and creativity.
  • Twitter:
    • Repost only here: spend your energy instead on posting on Linked In – so great! – and Bluesky.

Exercise: Designing Your Monthly Social Media Themes

To maintain consistency and keep your audience engaged, develop a thematic approach to your content:

  1. Identify Weekly Themes:
    • Assign specific themes to each day of the week. For example:
      • Sunday – Hero Spotlight: Highlight a mentor or industry leader who inspires your brand.
      • Tuesday – Offer Showcase: Present your products or services, finding diverse ways to showcase the same offering.
      • Thursday – Teaser Day: Share previews of upcoming content, such as an image, a story excerpt, or a snippet of a coaching exercise, encouraging followers to visit your website for more.
  2. Create Content in Batches:
    • Develop content for each theme in advance to ensure consistency and reduce last-minute stress.
  3. Schedule Posts:
    • Use social media management tools to schedule your posts according to your calendar, ensuring timely and regular content delivery.
  4. Monitor and Adjust:
    • Regularly review engagement metrics to assess which themes resonate most with your audience and adjust your strategy accordingly.

By implementing this structured approach, you’ll cultivate a dynamic and engaging social media presence that reflects your brand’s values and fosters meaningful connections with your audience.
